How digital coverage contributed to WCVB’s Service to America Award

I’m very proud to be a part of the newsroom honored with a 2026 Service to America Award, recognizing our service to the community across television and digital platforms in the wake of a mass shooting at Brown University and during the manhunt that followed.

The award is bestowed by the National Association of Broadcasters Leadership Foundation, which honored WCVB in the “Service to Community – First Informer” category.

Our entry chronicled our multimedia coverage, which kept the community informed and safe during the tense investigation that began after the attack in Rhode Island. An MIT professor was killed by the same gunman in Massachusetts, although we didn’t know the incidents were connected, at first. Days later, the shooter was found dead in New Hampshire.

The entry specifically referenced my interactive timeline of the evolving case, and a teammate’s video post that reached more than 1.2 million people in a day.
