Rocky Mountains ONA: Google tools and data journalism
Our growing Rocky Mountain-area group of the Online News Association held our largest meeting yet on the evening of July 10.
A Google representative who led the group through a litany of data journalism applications for tools his company offers, primarily involving a variety of map offerings. The lesson included Google Maps and Maps Engine, Street View, Fusion Tables, Google Earth and some tips about interesting automated photo handling in Google+. In the final segment, several “power user” search tools were reviewed to help the attendees find reliable data for their projects.
Held in a classroom donated by the University of Denver, 12 working journalists from eight Colorado organizations attended the training event.
